You Are My Sunshine

Over the years, I've used a certain analogy So many times in my music lessons. Last week, when it came up with both students and then in conversation with a dear friend, I realized I wanted to write about it. By coincidence, I was editing this Video of Barry Kay and I singing you are my sunshine from a gig at Plainsboro Library last week. I love when life lines up in such obvious ways as to point me in the direction of where to focus my creativity each day, each week.

And it's this love and appreciation that I just felt that is the metaphorical sunshine I'm referring to when I talk about giving yourself sunshine to grow.

Just like plants, we need the sunlight to grow and expand.

Metaphysical Girl Music Video Drop - Symbolism, Music and Healing Through Creativity

This song metaphysical Girl was written so long ago. I had been single for ages at that point. And though I was studying so many profound metaphysical subjects such as subatomic realms, dimensions, astral travel; I felt day to day life was proving very difficult for me. In particular, having true and real relationships. By then, I matured enough to know I was not turning out to be Madonna's ‘Material Girl’. Though I idolized her and that song as a girl, I was not lured by lust for material gain. However, I did feel trapped by this material world she sang of… and this is what I was expressing then.

Getting Creative in Nature - “Paint With All the Colors of the Wind”

This is the magic of nature. Nature can restore us to our true identity. It can heal our shame, and dissolve the blocks to our creative voice - both metaphorically and physically. We are reminded of our creative nature, which is as natural to us as breathing. But many of us, actually most of us, have been blocked from this ability thru trauma, poor education, and growing up in a world gone mad.

But it's still there. We never loose it, even when it's neglected and forgotten.

Spiritual Spirituals - Songs for Seekers

For many years, I’ve been quiet about my faith. I was raised Catholic, but just after confirmation, started exploring ALL other options. In college, I was surrounded by Evangelical Christians who displayed behavior 6.5 days of the week. Then for that Sunday morning, they were shined up and full of judgement for the rest of us. I spent my 20’s running as far away from Christianity as possible. I never wanted to be like those Sorority Girls who gave Jesus a bad name. But no matter what religion I researched, from Buddism to Atheism, they just weren’t it for me. I’m thankful I had the courage to seek, and ask questions, to learn and explore. This is what the 20’s is for, in my opinion.

Trauma Storm – a song I wrote about Hurricane Harvey hit New York

I wrote this song in 2017 after Hurricane Harvey finally made it's way up to New York City. I sat in a LES bar watching the rain, sick with guilt on how this very storm had ravaged my hometown. Back in Houston, most of my friends and family were dealing with devastating flooding and destruction of their homes. It was so strange to see falling so softly on NYC, as tame as a kitten by then.

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered Jazz Standard by Singing Pianist Lyndol Descant

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered am I… This was the title of the last episode of 'And Just Like That' (Sex and the City Reboot) and it made me think of this song instantly. Ironically, I never heard the song on the episode nor did I see the connection to the title, but like the plot of this reboot, filling in the blanks with my own imagination can provide some interesting insight.

I'll confess here first, that I LOVED Sex in the City back in the day. I watched the seasons as they came out, and then binge watched them for years after.

I was a single 20 something who was newly awakened to my artistic nature. Carrie Bradshaw was a hero who was making a living on her art in what seemed like the center of the Universe, New York City. Breaking the mold of step-ford wife was very real for me. This show offered a glimpse to another life.

I was living in Austin, working a corporate job, and dreaming of the day when I could paint, play music and write full time for a receptive audience. I am thankful to Carrie Bradshaw for helping me to inspire me to dream this dream.

Infinite Patience - January Mood in song and visuals

I first heard the idea of Infinite Patience from a Course in Miracles. I loved the idea instantly. Somehow, for an anxious person like me, it just worked like butter to calm my nerves. It set my mind in a different place. Rather than setting goal posts which I continually failed, and berated myself for failing, instead it was a quiet confidence that I would reach the goal, even if it took 9 lifetimes. What is time to an infinite universe? What is time to our souls?

2021 was Bittersweet for me. I played this song all the time. My partner captured me in a moment of honestly as I played it in a beautiful old home in Philly. The sound quality is not great, and the performance is not flawless, but I wanted to share on this last day of 2021. I've always love this song, but it never made more sense that in 2021.

Chase the Love Down by Lyndol Descant, Healing Patterns of Desperation to Find Love

No where is this more obvious than in nature where the illusions of our world are forgotten completely. The endless games of pretense and money are reduced to absolute nothingness in the face of the grandeur of time and space. The beauty and the abundance, the peace and the joy that are found in nature have nothing to do with Wall Street. In fact, it's being threatened by Wall Street.

Nature reminds us that we can't fix our problems with more striving, more money, more prestige.

We have to remember who we are in connection to this perfection that surrounds us. And that starts by just being still. That starts by listening to your own heart, your own emotions. That starts by expressing who you are right now, no judgment. That starts by facing our shadows and knowing that nothing is grander than true and real love. Can you feel that today? Have you ever felt that?

But I've noticed I'm starting to admire women who embrace their dark side; the ones who are tough. The ones that won't bury their heads under miles of inappropriate optimism. There is a strength in that kind of awareness.
I used to judge women like this. I’ve always been a Christian Woman in my heart. My image of myself was that I should be all love and light, to all people all the time. I was so fooled by a lot of new age beliefs. I tried relentlessly to live up to impossible ideals. It was like living half a life. I continually rejected the ugly parts of myself. I was hiding from myself because I was scared of what I’d find.

A Second Chance - New Original to inspire Renewal - Something We all Deserve

I wrote this song a year ago, when I had to return to my childhood home for a time. This was the house I grew up in and it was painful. Ghosts from my past and seemingly ancient memories haunted me in vivid colors.

I wrote this song to those express voices and personas from my past. These voices no longer express who I am anymore. But hearing them so clearly again pulled up so much that needed to be healed and laid to rest. I was hearing them, viewing them from my updated perspective. From a girl grown up who could listen with compassion to the cries of my inner child. And offer the wisdom I didn’t have back then.

If you are a creative, you know how hard such comments can be. It can shut down that fragile and mysterious flow which brings forth great creative gifts. But his resilience kept him composing, and we are all the richer today for it. This same resilience keeps me composing and creating everyday. Even though I can not say that we are out of danger at this moment. I can not say much with certainty anymore. But I do know that I'll keep being creative, keep living my life, keep evolving as a human, keep loving my neighbors no matter what.

Bob Marley's Song of Redemption calls us to sing with him Songs of Freedom

Redemption is a word that has been on my lips for months now. Singing Bob Marley's Redemption Song has been SUCH a comfort to me. It came into my mind early in the spring lockdown and I just couldn't play or sing it enough. In our solitude, my guy and I would jam on it together in my little Jersey City apartment. No matter how rough it got, we would find the fortitude we needed in that Redemption song; in those lyrics especially.

It's only now that I am finally in a place to better understand it’s power and share it with others through this impromptu video we did from one of our jam sessions.

I just learned this was Bob Marley's last song, on his last album. He performed it solo with only acoustic guitar; totally stripped of that classic Whailers’ sound. It makes his message stand out all the more. And what is that message? What does Redemption mean? It's hard to put into words.
