Music Is A Bridge From You to You - Lyndol Descant

I just so easy to give up on yourself, to stop sharing or even listening to your own authentic voice.

I'm Lyndol Descant and as long as I can remember I was too shy to speak up for myself. I shrank away from attention like shadow from light. And worst of all – compliments.

I don't know why I was like that. Maybe it was my childhood circumstances, maybe I was born that way.

What I do know is that I would have remained that way for a lifetime had it not been for music.

Music is unlike anything else in our known world. Music is vibration. Music is Rhythm. Music is emotion. Music is communication. Music is Mathematics and mathematics is said to be the language of our universe. And when you study music enough, you realize music is magic. And that in our modern world we grossly underestimate it's power.

Live Performance from Dosey Doe's Open Mic Finals - The Value of Open Mics for Songwriters and Musicians

It's been years and years since I did an open mic. I was always too busy with tons of my own gigs. Plus most open mics don't have a piano - so it's a lot of work to bring my keyboard, set up for a couple of songs.

So why did I start going again? Because going to open mic's is so good for your music practice in so many ways! My first year in New York, I lived 5 minutes from a fantastic open mic! I went from 7pm to 4am and was booked up everywhere. The level of musicians was incredible. On top of that - they had a piano on stage! I went every Tuesday for a year. The benefits of that year I still feel to this day. Here’s a few reasons to spend some time at an open mic…

Why Do We Fall - Video and Single Release by Lyndol Descant, Produced by Colin Hua

Why Do We Fall is a jazzy tune about Narcissist/Empath relationship patterns. It was a rabbit hole I went down at the time whilst having a crush on a guy who was in a toxic relationship with a girl who was treating him like dirt.

You can check it out here in video form, or buy the single for $1.

Going Back to Analogue - New Music and Video by Lyndol Descant

Going Back to Analogue is a original instrumental set to my recent phone videos. I wanted to communicate the idea of a return to a simpler, cleaner lifestyle, closer to nature, as God intended. How this will look? That's what I'm interested in igniting hearts and imaginations towards...

Bob Marley's Song of Redemption calls us to sing with him Songs of Freedom

Redemption is a word that has been on my lips for months now. Singing Bob Marley's Redemption Song has been SUCH a comfort to me. It came into my mind early in the spring lockdown and I just couldn't play or sing it enough. In our solitude, my guy and I would jam on it together in my little Jersey City apartment. No matter how rough it got, we would find the fortitude we needed in that Redemption song; in those lyrics especially.

It's only now that I am finally in a place to better understand it’s power and share it with others through this impromptu video we did from one of our jam sessions.

I just learned this was Bob Marley's last song, on his last album. He performed it solo with only acoustic guitar; totally stripped of that classic Whailers’ sound. It makes his message stand out all the more. And what is that message? What does Redemption mean? It's hard to put into words.

Sharing the Music

Mid June, 2019 I wrote this in my journal; “End of the Year, another school year down. I'm exhausted.

I've been teaching for 12 years now and though my teaching schedule is smaller and smaller each year in proportion to performing and online work, it still seems to occupy SO MUCH of my heart and energy.

Nothing demonstrates this dedication more than the recital season (in May) each year. It just really it takes it out of me. Somehow I can't seem to make myself care less about it; to just be chill and enjoy the process. No! All my neurosis pop to the surface and rear their ugly and rigid heads.”

Launch of Vocal + Piano Forum On PianoGroove!

I’m so so super excited to be launching a new forum on Pianogroove this week. I’ll be leading the discussion on many different fronts that relate to the singing pianist, as well as the accompanying pianist, and musicians in general. I’ve been a gigging musician and teach for the past 8 years, and I love this chance to share my voice on creating inspired music and building skill as a pianist, singer AND singing pianist. I’ll even include exercises. I’m part of a growing number of musicians who no longer buy into the competitive mindset, but instead seek growth and empowerment thru collaboration. Here’s one of my first posts there…

Another Great Album Review for Reach Up

On her self-produced second album, the sublimely talented Lyndol Descant gives us a recording that is melodic and sweet listening for anyone’s ears. I should clarify, that last descriptor could easily be misconstrued as a milquetoast synapses, as if it could just as easily be background music – quite the opposite.

Album Review for Reach Up

Lyndol Descant's singing blends so achingly well with her piano that she's almost like a one-woman duo. They're both instruments, her voice and her keyboard. When they're locked into each other, which happens often on her new album Reach Up, it is remarkably powerful. From beginning to end, Reach Up is an experience of sound and feeling. Descant isn't restrained by stylistic boundaries, either. Her compositions reach into pop, jazz fusion, and alternative sounds, their elements mixing together in complete harmony.
